My name is Lisa Maria Rhodes , the Founder and Executive Director of ALAS. Today there is a student in jail instead of school, only because their family is too poor to afford bail. Today there is a student missing school to go to court, where they will lose their case and get a deportation order because there is no public defender in immigration court and they can’t afford an attorney.
Donations made by ordinary people like you, no matter how big or small, help ALAS fulfill its mission – train educators to support immigrant and court involved youth in two ways:
1) write letters to judges so students can be in school instead of in jail pre-trial
2) connect undocumented students to pro-bono and low bono immigration attorneys.

about your donations, where & how they are used
ALAS provides solutions. We train educators to do two things: get students back in school instead of in jail pre-trial, and pair immigrant students with free or low-cost legal representation. So far, no one has ever been paid by ALAS. Everyone has been a volunteer working multiple jobs to make this work, including our ED. Our goal is to hire 2 staff members by summer 2020 so we can expand our services to more students. We have already raised 20% of what we need to make that happen.
