What We Do.
ALAS trains educators with trauma-informed approaches to:
1) connect undocumented students with legal representation.
2) write mitigation letters to criminal court judges.
why we do it.
There are over 1,100 student arrests in Orleans Parish yearly. Those who can’t afford bond wait in jail for a minimum of 2 months and maximum of 2 years before trial. This increases trauma, drop-out rates and recidivism.
74% of all high school graduates continue to higher ed. 0% of undocumented high school graduates advance. Undocumented students do not qualify for federal financial aid or in-state tuition rates. 2,400 students in Orleans Parish are English Language Learners.
So far, ALAS has supported over 500 students.
7,500 Orleans Parish students need our help now.
